In Argentina students celebrate their day on 21st September and it is also the arrival of Spring. Students prepare outdoors activities to enjoy the nature, to eat in the open outside, to play sports , in other words, they get pleasure from the new scenery offered by the new season. Spring is welcomed indeed.
Students participate actively in social meetings planned by themselves. They go dancing, camping and they also organise parties or they simply gather in a house to drink 'mate', a typical Argentine drink. Music is always present.
In Buenos Aires students usually go to `Bosques de Palermo´ which is one of the largest park in Buenos Aires. The area allows visitors to enjoy the streets for joggins, bikes rides as well as a bit of sunbathing.
Many groups with distinct tribal features such as Floggers, Emos, Cumbieros or Posh can be found there or in any other park. Each group shares the way they dress, the music they listen to or their attitudes to life.
Floggers is a very popular group among teenagers. The origin of the word comes from foto (photo) and the association with the word log, that is to say, photolog or photoblog.
They sign their friend´s fotolog. A flogger is popular when his or her photolog is frequently visited and signed. They wear V-necks fluorescent t-shirts, tight coloured jeans called 'chupines' and canvas trainers or skate shoes. As regards their plysical appearence they wear long fringe covering their eyes. They listen to Techno music.
Cumbieros are also very popular. The name of the group comes from the kind of music they listen to : Cumbia. Argentina Cumbia, especially Cumbia Villera which is one type of Argentinian Cumbia is music of protest. It expresses both political and society complaints. The topics are related to drugs, crime, poverty, social classes and exclusion. Some of the lyrics are very agressive and against the law.
There are also Floggers Cumbieros who see the world in the way the Cumbieros do, but they also have their own fotolog and spend a lot of hours in the cybercafes.
Other group is the Emos. Their members are shy and sensitive teenagers. They have dyed black hair brushed over one side of the face in order to protect themselves from the world which is considered by this group as a difficult and cruel place to live in. They are dressed in black clothes and they listen to sentimental music.
Other remarkable group is the Posh or `chetos.´Posh are trendy people. Their look is very important for them. They only wear designer clothes. Their favourite music is Techno.
Students have different perspectives of the world which are expressed in their attitudes, music, feelings and the way they look like. Each group is defined by their identity which is closely related to the idea of culture. Identities are formed through the cultures to which belong or in which people participe and all of them participate in celebrating the student´s day.
