Again... I were thinking all night about the english education for my child. Her name is Angie who just 2 years old. My husband and I know a english environment is need to be provided for a learner. But, we are living in a traditional chinese family and without any english speaking housekeeper. Also, we are not fluent in this language.
I am under a big pressure and trying to living with 'english'... how to make friend with some foreign families who are willing to talk to us?
But I know the main problem is: I am quite afraid to misunderstand the english meaning and become a rude person. For example: I said to my friend, 'what's up?' and his feedback is 'Why you so unpolite?'
Do not know how to start....

Hi Anneric -
I feel sympathy for you! There are always some difficulties when we're learning how to be polite in another language. However, I think you can feel confident, because you know you are polite. It's just a matter of finding the right words. Perhaps you can ask your friend to help you use the right words: 'Oh dear, what should I say?'.
To me, 'What's up?' does mean 'How are you?' or 'How are things with you?' (very informal). But to me, it also means, 'What's the problem?'. The meaning can be altered depending on context, tone of voice, etc. So, I'd always say a more formal and neutral 'How are you?' to be safe!
Does this suggestion look right to you?
Have you tried the British Council's LearnEnglish Kids website? It's got lots of lovely activities you can try out with your little one when she's ready. Plus there's the site for adults too. You can find both at http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/
Best wishes in your continuing adventures with English!
